Trump Criminal Trial Begins

Published

on

On Monday morning, the unprecedented criminal trial of former President Donald Trump commenced with the commencement of jury selection. This marks the initiation of a process anticipated to extend over two weeks.

This trial represents the first instance in American history where a president faces criminal charges in court. Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, a Democrat, has leveled 34 felony charges against Trump, alleging the falsification of documents to cover up a sex scandal. Conviction could potentially result in jail time for Trump.

Former US President Donald Trump attends the first day of his trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs, at Manhattan Criminal Court in New York City on April 15, 2024. Trump is in court Monday as the first US ex-president ever to be criminally prosecuted, a seismic moment for the United States as the presumptive Republican nominee campaigns to re-take the White House. The scandal-plagued 77-year-old is accused of falsifying business records in a scheme to cover up an alleged sexual encounter with adult film actress Stormy Daniels to shield his 2016 election campaign from adverse publicity.

In a statement shared on Truth Social on Monday, Trump expressed his conviction, stating, “As I step into that courtroom, I am buoyed by the support of 200 million Americans, and I am determined to advocate for the liberty of 325 million Americans!”

Throughout of the trial, Trump is anticipated to be present in the courtroom and may even testify while simultaneously carrying out his presidential campaign activities. It’s projected that the trial could extend into June.

Trump voiced his belief on Monday that the court case constitutes election interference, questioning why the lawsuit wasn’t filed seven years ago when he believes it was already discredited. This sentiment was expressed through a post on his social media platform, Truth Social.

Once the 12 jurors are chosen, they will be tasked with evaluating Mr. Cohen’s testimony firsthand. He is anticipated to be the prosecution’s key witness, confronting a former employer whom he once admired but now holds disdain for.

The process of jury selection holds significant importance for both the prosecution and the defense. Prosecutors enjoy a certain advantage, given that the jury pool is drawn from Manhattan, a notably Democratic stronghold in the United States. Conversely, Mr. Trump’s legal team will be seeking to identify sympathetic jurors amidst a predominantly Democratic jury pool

On Monday, Trump expressed frustration over a broad gag order that restricts his ability to speak out. He asserted that the judge’s decision to silence him is unconstitutional, claiming it unfairly hinders his ability to defend himself while allowing the opposing side to freely discuss him. Trump labeled the trial as rigged due to these constraints.

Alina Habba: They are prosecuting Trump because the can’t win the Elections

Published

on

Alina Habba, a lawyer and spokesperson for former President Donald Trump, alleged that Democrats are targeting the Republican presidential nominee in court because they are unable to defeat him through electoral means.

“The fact that we have two courts, not one — criminal and civil — being used against one man because they cannot beat him in the polls is a disgrace to the American judicial system,” she said in remarks at the New York State Supreme Court Building in Manhattan after opening arguments in the hush money case.

Habba mentioned that she had recently attended another court session where Trump faced accusations of inflating his asset values to obtain advantageous loans, which he has since repaid. Initially, he was instructed to post a $454 million bond before appealing, but an appellate court later reduced it to $175 million. On Monday, New York Judge Arthur Engoron approved this bond, effectively preventing New York Attorney General Letitia James, a Democrat, from seizing his assets while the case is under appeal.

Habba accused Engoron of not understanding “basic principles of financing” and said he and James “had no idea what they were talking about.”

“I am sick of coming in front of the press and saying this, but you have to because you people need to understand what is going on. God forbid you put an accounting thing in for ‘legal counsel.’ … Because they’re afraid of 2024. And you know what? They should be because the American people are not stupid. They see what’s going on,” she said.

Republicans want to defend America and to ban the foreign aid help because Democrats wont do it

A GOP lawmaker aims to limit the presence of foreign flags in the House chamber following Democrats’ waving of the Ukrainian flag in celebration of the $60.84 billion aid legislation passage. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) rebuked the display, calling it a breach of decorum. Now, Republicans are drafting legislation to ban the display of foreign flags on the floor entirely.

“Watching American representatives pass out & wave Ukrainian flags in the United States House of Representatives chamber infuriated me,” Rep. Kat Cammack (R-FL) said in a post on X. “If there is one room in our country that should only have the American flag present, it is this room.”

The timing for bringing the legislation to the floor remains uncertain, but Cammack’s team is currently drafting the text. Representatives won’t reconvene until April 29. Some lawmakers expressed dismay over the Ukrainian flag display, leading to a tense moment when Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-FL) urged Democrats to “put those damn flags away” during votes.

Johnson also admonished members, later issuing a statement referring to a “disturbance on the House floor.”

“In these extraordinary times, both in the House and globally, it’s crucial to maintain decorum,” Johnson remarked. “We should only wave one flag on the House floor, and I believe we all know which flag that is.”

Democrats defended their celebration, with some even engaging with pro-Ukrainian protesters post-vote. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) expressed gratitude to many in the crowd for their support.

A list of possible co-sponsors for Cammack’s bill is not yet known, although a handful of House Republicans criticized Democrats for the move, indicating substantial support among rank-and-file GOP lawmakers.

“Shouldn’t have any other flag but the American flag on the House floor,” Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) said. “That’s ridiculous. … It’s inappropriate. It’s just lack of order.”

Betrayal accomplished: Mike Johnson approves $61 billion in aid for Ukraine, disregarding the Hastert Rule

Published

on

Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) handed President Joe Biden a $61 billion package on Saturday afternoon, going back on his previous commitment to withhold foreign aid until the border was secured. Amid the closing vote for the Ukraine aid, several Democrats, and some Republicans, applauded, chanted “Ukraine,” and waved Ukrainian flags. Johnson criticized Democrats for breaching decorum by waving flags on the floor.

“It is in violation of decorum to waive flags on the floor,” Johnson scored Democrats.

The Ukraine portion of the foreign aid passed 311 to 112. One representative, Republican Dan Mauser (R-PA), voted present.

Johnson, once again, violated the Hastert Rule. Only 101 Republicans voted with Johnson, while 112 — a clear majority — opposed.

Republican House members circulated a document outlining a timeline of Johnson’s repeated insistence that the House would not advance a foreign aid package before securing America’s southern border.

Johnson’s change of heart started becoming evident in early March, following a meeting at the White House on February 28. This shift in stance comes after months of influence from both the White House and establishment Republicans.

The White House and intelligence state reeducation of Mike Johnson began before his seat warmed. According to Politico, “the administration held several closed-door briefings for Johnson and other lawmakers to update them on the deteriorating situation in Ukraine, starting just days after Johnson became speaker.”

Officials involved in those briefings included CIA Director William Burns and National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan.

The Ukraine bill will be bundled into a larger foreign aid package that does not include border security.
